The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) tracks key research metrics for the University of Minnesota, including national rankings, proposals and awards, sponsored expenditures, and technology commercialization performance measures. Several of these metrics are part of Commitments 2 and 3 in the University’s MPact 2025 Systemwide Strategic Plan.
The RIO UMN Research Statistics website highlights the University’s upcoming research priorities, published annual reports, recent research highlights, and publishes the most recent research-related key performance metrics for:
- Research Awards: the total value of research awards by sector per fiscal year.
- R&D Expenditures: research expenditures, including both external awards and internal institutional funding per fiscal year, and national rankings based on research expenditures such as the NSF HERD Survey
- Technology Commercialization: University-developed technologies that reach the market through the support of UMN Technology Commercialization
